12:22Now PlayingWhat other global leaders have Trumpian traits? The upcoming election in Brazil, South America’s largest democracy, is right around the corner. The current president, Jair Bolsonaro, is running in a tightening election against Luiz Ignácio Lula da Silva, a former president of Brazil and largely a leftist.
There are many reasons that folks like to compare Bolsonaro & Trump, but it’s important to go through just a few of them to see how the fascist style is being copied globally. Bolsonaro is currently questioning the integrity of the upcoming elections, saying that it will only be legitimate if he is the winner, sound familiar? He has also destroyed environmental and undermined civic protections and safety nets, allowing untold acres of rainforest to be stripped and gutted for profit, only to be left in a state of total habitat destruction. He’s mocked and targeted the LGBTQ+ community, advocated for violence against his political enemies, and told one female lawmaker that she ‘wasn’t attractive enough to be raped’. It’s a disgusting playbook followed by wannabe dictators the world over. Needless to say four more years of Bolsonaro would be a disaster for Brazil.
