This week, New York State Attorney General Letitia James filed a lawsuit against Trump in civil court, accusing him and his adult children and his business, of fraud. Beyond that, other federal charges have been referred to federal prosecutors, who may or may not decide to prosecute Trump based purely on political considerations.
What about the classified documents the FBI took back from Trump? The former president appeared on Fox News’ Sean Hannity where he gave some truly Trumpian rebuttals to the accusations. In his appearance, he claims that presidents can declassify documents “even by thinking about it.” This somehow also includes taking them with you in a satchel wherever you’d like. Over classification is one thing, but for a guy who made information security a hallmark of 2016 (“But her emails!?”) you might expect a bit more discretion.
“This conduct cannot be brushed aside and dismissed as some sort of good-faith mistake… The statements of financial condition were greatly exaggerated, grossly inflated, objectively false, and therefore fraudulent and illegal. And as a result of that we are seeking relief, and Mr. Trump, the Trump Organization, his family, they should all be held accountable,” Leticia James said at a press conference in New York.
