For weeks now, Iranian women and men have been protesting the murder of Kurdish Iranian woman Mahsa Amini, who was beaten into a coma (and later died) after being detained and assaulted by Iranian morality police for failing to “properly” wear a hijab. We were joined this week by Iranian-American comedian Zahra Noorbakhsh to discuss the ongoing protests.
Amini’s death sparked a wave of mass protests, with thousands of women taking to the streets to protest her murder, the injustice of Iran’s laws around women’s dress, and broadly the anti-democratic government. Since Amini’s death on September 19th, at least 75 demonstrators have been killed by government forces, and thousands detained.
In a speech at the United Nations later in September, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said “There is freedom of expression in Iran ... but acts of chaos are unacceptable," which sounds extremely familiar to American political responses to police killings. Videos have been circulating of women burning their veils and cuttin their hair in protest of Iran’s morality laws.
