Can We Do Diplomacy Not Nuclear Armageddon With Russia?

Will Putin use nuclear weapons against Ukrainian forces? “We have not faced the prospect of Armageddon since Kennedy and the Cuban Missile Crisis” Biden said last week, referring to the specter of nuclear weapons use in eastern Ukraine, “because his military is — you might say — significantly underperforming… [Putin] is not joking when he talks about the use of tactical nuclear weapons or biological or chemical weapons.”

In response, Biden said earlier this month that the use of any such weapons would risk “Armageddon.” It’s not exactly clear whether Biden was making a threat on behalf of his own nuclear arsenal, or if he was speaking about Russia’s use of nuclear weapons. The White House declined to clarify what Biden meant by these comments, so his meaning is therefore pretty self-evident.

Last month, while announcing a military draft for Russian men, Putin said “I want to remind you that our country also has various means of destruction ... and when the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, to protect Russia and our people, we will certainly use all the means at our disposal… It’s not a bluff.”
