as posted by the channelWhat happened to the red wave? Republicans may have barely clinched the House, but when you look at election results from last week’s midterm you’ll notice the distinct shape of an L all throughout the performance of Republicans up and down the ticket (in every state except Florida and New York, but we’ll get more into those states a bit later). We were joined this week by Nelini Stamp, National Director of Strategy & Partnerships at Working Families Party, and comedian Kurt Braunohler to sort through some of Tuesday’s results.
The major result from last week was that Democrats will maintain control of the Senate, which means that Joe Biden will be able to appoint more federal judges, and even possibly a SCOTUS pick, which will have long-lasting ramifications for the U.S. judicial system. In the other chamber, the fact that it took over a week for Republicans to officially win the House, when they were expecting blowout victories, is also a pretty phenomenal result for Dems.
The way things are shaping up, this could be the smallest house majority since the 1920s, and it would only take a few appointments, a death, or some other random event for the House to flip back to Democrats. While that’s certainly nothing to actively root for, this result was almost unimaginable to all but a few just last week.
