Having a pro-union president is, in America, an incredibly easy threshold to clear. This is mainly because 99% of American presidents throughout history would call the Pinkertons well before calling a union boss, but we digress. In the two years since Biden became president he’s helped make some moderate gains for unions, however, all that goodwill went directly into the toilet within the past few weeks.
Last week, after being unusually silent about the broken down contract negotiations between the major freight rail companies and their major unions, the White House broke its silence by siding with the bosses. While the unions were asking for sick days and schedules that allow you to have a semblance of life outside of your job, the bosses were offering a little bit more money to shut up forever.
Instead of intervening for the unions, and mandating that these companies give their union employees sick days, as is Congress is expressed given permission to do in the law, a Democratic controlled House and Senate threw those reasonable demands (demands that fall well short of Biden’s campaign promise for paid time off) right where they think they belong: the trash.
