It’s a fun topic to think about, especially when you’re stuck in the midst of an internet designed to suck every possible ounce of privacy and every ad dollar out of your eyeballs.
As Apartheid Emerald Mine Heir Elon Musk continues his campaign to make every Twitter timeline as soul sucking and contrived as possible, we thought this might be a good time to think about what an “actually good” online space might look like. What came before wasn’t great, and what we have now is worse than that, but let’s remember that a better world is possible, and we need an alternative vision as much as we need to understand why the status quo sucks.
As our guest Paris Marx reminds us, the internet was completely public infrastructure until the 1990s, at which point it was privatized and the commercialization of online spaces began in earnest. Maybe that was a mistake, and a mistake we can undo. Instead of the techno libertarian vision, the internet should be a public good. A space that isn’t designed with the market in mind, whose sole purpose isn’t to vacuum every cent and every piece of marketable data out of you. Maybe that would allow us to cultivate spaces that aren’t full of the highly engagement worthy content that literally makes us worse human beings over time?
