At least 30 people have died due to the waves of blizzards that have been sweeping across the great lakes over the past few weeks. Right now, people in Buffalo are barely even ready to retrieve their cars, restore power to their homes, or restore basic functions of society. Instead, they are busy trying to figure out how to get people in shelters and out of the dangerous weather that has already claimed the lives of dozens.
Over the past few days, towns around Buffalo New York have received upwards of 50 inches of snow (1.25m or so) on top of what had already accumulated in the previous two blizzards. Photos out of WNY show snowdrifts towering over homes, and businesses situated across lake Eerie completely encased in ice due to the 18-foot waves that have battered the shore.
It’s insanity out there, and it’s going to get worse. This weekend, higher temperatures are expected that are likely to melt this insane snowfall, leading to even more flooding and destruction. Many of the people who died did so not because they were bored and wanted to leave their house during essentially martial law, instead, many were on the way to retrieve the supplies necessary to help them hunker down and survive a storm like this.
