As the 2020 Congress wraps up in preparation for a Republican majority in 2023, Democrats recently passed their $1.7 trillion dollar spending package that included some good stuff, plenty of bad stuff, but mostly just military industrial complex stuff. Let’s go through a little bit of it, shall we?
Under the previous Congress, lawmakers had completely eliminated a congressional mechanism for awarding federal money to individual projects, which most people lovingly know as “earmarks” or, more degrading, “pork.” Earmarks were seen as a semi corrupt practice, but as it turns out a little corruption makes it a lot easier to pass major legislation, so Democrats brought it back at the beginning of this Congress.
So what made it into this whirlwind piece of legislation? Just about everything under the sun that a war profiteer could want, plus some pocket change for actual social issues. This bill dramatically increased funding for DHS and ICE, a $860B military budget (an increase of $80B), another $47B for war in Ukraine and $0 for COVID. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was the only Congressional Democrat to vote against it.
