as posted by the channelDemocrats have been fighting an 80-year battle to hold onto the shattered remains of a social democracy that was first created by Roosevelt’s New Deal in the 1930s and 40s. As a political force, our system needs an empowered left if there is any possibility of reform and restoring a social contract. As it stands, we’re one election away from fascists being able to seize power pretty much at all times, and changing that state of affairs requires building a whole new one.
In order to pack the Supreme Court, or reform the Senate, or bring DC into the union as a full state, or any number of progressive priorities, building a stable and coherent coalition of people who can believe in the messages their hearing is the only way to get there. On the local level, this requires building local political power outside the bounds of Democratic machines and corporate influence.
Bernie in 2016 and 2020 showed that there is a way forward, but unfortunately he fell short. To improve on what he built, progressives need their own machine that is capable of turning out the working class and leftists that can challenge the establishment players in places where Bernie struggled.
