Babe wake up, a new January 6th just dropped. As Marx once said, history repeats itself, first as tragedy, then as farce. While January 6th was a tragic indicator of the health of American democracy, January 8th in Brazil was somehow even more pathetic than the Trump fueled attempted coup on January 6th, 2020.
Here’s a summary of what happened, according to Reuters: “Supporters of Brazil's far-right former President Jair Bolsonaro invaded and defaced the country's Congress, presidential palace and Supreme Court on Sunday… There were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries from their rampage, but the invaders left a trail of destruction, throwing furniture through the smashed windows of the presidential palace, flooding parts of Congress with a sprinkler system and ransacking ceremonial rooms in the Supreme Court.” Does the aimless trashing of a legislative building sound familiar?
Although the January 6th protests ended without much fanfare, just a slow disbursement of armed and angry people suffering from a lifetime of lead poisoning, January 8th ended as most attempted coups do: with a military crackdown. The Justice minister was almost immediately sacked by the Brazil Supreme Court, and the military arrived after not too long to perform mass arrests on the supposed patriots.
