The newly-minted Republican majority in the House of Representatives is hardly a few weeks old, but already their tiny majority is being threatened by a man from Long Island whose resume looks like the plot of a post 9/11 Forrest Gump, with about as much historical accuracy.
The amount of fraud and dishonesty displayed by this man is truly astounding. Here’s how the New York Times described his resume, “He is the son of Brazilian immigrants, and the first openly gay Republican to win a House seat as a non-incumbent. By his account, he catapulted himself from a New York City public college to become a “seasoned Wall Street financier and investor” with a family-owned real estate portfolio of 13 properties and an animal rescue charity that saved more than 2,500 dogs and cats.” As it turns out, the only thing true about this is that he’s a Republican. He lied about where he worked, his charity, literally everything. He’s probably been a registered Democrat too.
This story is truly remarkable. Latest from the Washington Post is that Santos got campaign funds from the cousin of a Russian oligarch. What?! Even in an age demarcated by half truths and distored realities, the scale of Santos’ fraud is a lot to take in. Sadly, Santos’ opponent in his House race actually uncovered many of these revelations, and somehow the New York Times at the time decided not to report on the story. When asked about it on Twitter, the voice of The New York Times, Michael Barbaro, took the opportunity to blame news consumers for not demanding more from local media. Thanks dude, but shouldn’t the New York Times be interested in a federal election in NYC’s backyard?
