How The Supreme Court Is Destroying Civil Rights (with Elie Mystal)

As the Supreme Court begins another session, it’s once again time to ask the experts what fundamental rights will be stripped away this term? Last year they got rid of the federal right to privacy that protected the right to an abortion, but that was just them getting started. With a fully empowered conservative majority, for whom any right is subject to judicial review, buckle up for another terrible term.

Striking down Roe V Wade was the first time in American history that a constitutionally protected action was stripped, and rights were lost across the board. Without much pushback, and no one willing to challenge the legitimacy of this fundamentally anti-Democratic and elitist institution, the Court is ready to go above and beyond.

As the court attempts to impose a Christian nationalism on every American, we’re likely to see the return of so-called “religious freedom” cases, which will set up the ability for people to legally discriminate against the Queer community in previously protected ways. Prayer in public school is also something we’ll probably see. Labor rights. Gun control. The ability for Republicans to get away with their next attempted coup (even though they didn’t have many problems making that disappear after 2020). It’s going to be a bad few…decades?
