If it was like a shocking number of cities nationwide, chances are that it used COVID money to pay for a violent gang’s overtime. We’re talking about cops of course. According to the Marshall Project, one of very few institutions interested in discovering how thousands of cities spent billions of dollars of COVID relief, some of the top recipients of this money had nothing at all to do with an airborne viral pandemic.
Cities and states nationwide have seen massive budget surpluses for the first time in decades, leaving many city officials with the unusual question of what to do with all this free money. Ostensibly, this money was given to help recover from COVID. One might imagine spending this money on some of the frontline workers (nurses, grocery store workers, etc etc), or maybe on ventilation, or maybe even to encourage sustainable local development through housing or giving money to those most impacted. Unfortunately, this is America so we spent it on more guns and over policing.
