In February, Representative Max Miller (R-Ohio) led an effort to remove Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota) from her committee assignments, specifically on the House Foreign Relations Committee. While serving on that committee, Rep. Omar was a consistent voice against the reflex towards military solutions, and also an ally of Palestinian people, Yemeni people, and other marginalized and persecuted groups suffering under U.S. hegemony.
Ostensibly she is being punished for a tweet she made a few years back, where she connected political support towards Israel and being greedy. “It’s all about the Benjamins baby,” she tweeted in 2019, in reference to AIPAC, an Israeli lobbying group. Within hours, she was condemned by Nancy Pelosi and other leadership Democrats, and two House resolutions were passed against her. She subsequently apologized for her tweet, explaining that she wasn’t fully aware of the anti-Semitic reference. To be honest, we aren’t totally aware of it either.
And even after being removed from her position on the House committee, current Speaker of the House Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), said this: “Representative Omar certainly has made mistakes… She has used anti-Semitic tropes that were clearly and unequivocally condemned by House Democrats.” Effectively playing into Republican lies about Omar being antiemetic, all the while we’ve got folks like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene going on about Jewish space lasers.
