as posted by the channelCan you ever escape sexual harassment? Even if you went to the edge of the earth, say for instance Antarctica, it turns out that there’s no escape. Jokes aside, as it turns out, Antarctica is actually experiencing an epidemic of creepy and extremely out of pocket dudes. According to a report release in 2022, women who work at the science stations on the remote continent have almost an 80% rate of sexual harassment/assult.
According to reporting from Undark and Mother Jones: “the 273-page elephant in the room—a document the NSF released in late August detailing a decades-long history of pervasive sexual harassment and assault at Antarctic research stations. Almost three-quarters of women surveyed agreed that harassment was a problem, describing it as a “fact of life” on the continent. And 95 percent of women interviewed in focus groups knew someone who had experienced assault or harassment within the Antarctic program.”
So… what were these scientific institutions’ response? COLDEX, the organization that manages some antarctic sites, is supposedly implementing a new system that should take care of many of the surface level issues without dealing with the root of the problem, according to those involved in the process.
