Power Hungry Republicans Afraid of Young Democrats

UPDATE: On Wednesday, in a 7-0 vote, the Shelby County Board of Commissioners reinstated ousted congressmen Justin J. Pearson. Both of the representatives expelled from the Tennessee chamber have now been reinstated to their seats, less than a week after Republican leaders voted to oust them. Rep. Justin Jones is the other Black representative who will regain his seat after a civil war era mechanism was used to oust two Black lawmakers for organizing a demonstration. Both will serve out the rest of their terms on an interim basis and will be able to run for reelection.

Their expulsions came in the wake of a protest organized at the state house, which itself was a response to the Covenant School mass shooting. A third lawmaker, Rep. Gloria Johnson, who also participated, was not treated similarly. "We are losing our democracy in Tennessee,” Rep Pearson said. "This is another example of the erosion of democracy because we spoke up for gun reform. Because we spoke up for people and children who will never become state legislators, who will never graduate from high school and never get engaged, never be able to see or protest for their own lives because they've been killed by gun violence."
