6:51Now PlayingWhat’s going on in Hollywood right now? In case you missed it, the Writers Guild of America, the union of professionals who make up the folks who write mass market movies and television, are on strike for a better relationship between themselves and the studio. The last writer strike was in the mid 2000s, and lasted for just over 3 months, and resulted in better wages and better conditions for writers. Things have changed a lot since then, though.
With the rise of streaming and other platforms for multimedia, studios have found every excuse in the book to deny writwers the traditional forms of compensation that guild members made their living on. Residuals have been ground down to almost nothing (residuals being money writers get from episodes of their show being on reruns) due to platforms like Netflix pioneering new models in exploitation in these industries.
