The show premiered on TLC in 2008 and showcased the lives of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, along with their myriad of children.
However, as the new documentary Shiny Happy People shows there is something dark behind the mega-family’s wholesome Americana surface.
In 2015, the show was canceled and faced controversy following revelations about Josh Duggar, the eldest son, who admitted to inappropriate actions during his teenage years. This revelation led to public backlash and raised questions about the family's handling of the situation. Further the families conservative values stem from a creepy religious organization the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP) which emaphasizes adherence to biblical principles, conservative values, and traditional gender roles.
Institute in Basic Life Principles and its founder, Bill Gothard, have faced criticism and controversy. Some former members and critics have raised concerns about the organization's teachings being overly authoritarian, patriarchal, and cult-like. Accusations of spiritual and emotional abuse, as well as allegations of misconduct by Bill Gothard, have also been made.
