as posted by the channelThe Nakba, meaning "catastrophe" in Arabic, refers to the forced displacement and dispossession of Palestinians during the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948. The Nakba resulted in the loss of land, property, and livelihoods for Palestinians, creating a lasting humanitarian crisis that still affects generations today. 75 years later, Palestinians face another deadly spring of air raids and home demolitions.
We talked to Noura Erakat, Palestinian-American activist, professor, legal scholar, and human rights attorney about the interconnection of American and Israeli politics and the occupation of Palestine. Through the establishment of Israeli settlements, restrictions on movement, and a system of checkpoints Palestinians' access to basic services are limited and human rights are often infringed.
At the same this spring, Israeli protesters took to the streets to rally for democracy against the Netanyahu government's plans to overhaul the judicial system. But where do Palestinians and their self determination fit into these mass demonstrations? We talked to Erakat about how pro-democracy efforts do or don’t mesh with the ongoing struggle for Palestinian liberation.
