What Happened To Everyday Women After The Repeal of Roe

What’s the impact of depriving people of vital reproductive healthcare?

We invited Bryce Covert, independent journalist writing about the economy and families, to talk with us about her new investigation titled What It's Like to Have an Abortion Denied by Dobbs, out now with In These Times magazine.

We talked with Covert about her profile of a mom in Mississippi who found out about a pregnancy with her second child, one she was not prepared for, around the same time Mississippi’s abortion ban trigger law went into effect. Last summer, after Roe v. Wade was overturned, at least 14 states enacted these trigger laws heavily restricting access to abortion, often with no exceptions and banning the procedure after only a handful of weeks—often before people know they are pregnant.

With a federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour, states rolling back Medicaid, and poisoned water (as in the case of Jackson Mississippi), many women aren’t ecstatic to bring another life into the world. Furthermore, a lack of workplace support and paid parental leave, and the general financial burdens of childcare make the economic impacts of being a parent even more difficult. We talk about all this and more with Covert and predict what the long lasting impacts of repealing Roe will look like.
