How will movie studios try to recreate the Barbie and Oppenheimer phenomenon?

Thanks to the two movies and people’s thirst for a summer double feature, July now ranks as one of the top-performing months in the history of movies. Barbie will soon cross $1 billion globally and the blockbuster is one of the top selling female written and directed films are all time.

But Barbie isn’t the first movie based around a toy, think the Lego Movie, Toy Story, Transformers, Trolls, Jumanji -- the list goes on. Similarly Hollywood loves to make movies about a complicated man in history, Oppenheimer was the scientist who lead The Manhattan Project—the team that developed the atomic bomb for the United States of America in World War II.

While Barbie and Oppenheimer might seem like a strange pair, its clear that moviemakers will be trying to crack the code of these hits for years to come. That’s only exacerbated by the simultaneous actors and writers strikes rocking the entertainment industry. As theaters overall are still trying to rebound from the mass exodus from Covid-19 and battle the culture of streaming that workers are also rallying against, Francesca and her guest brainstorm what other corporate IP adaptations Hollywood should get working on.
