DeSantis Tells Florida Teachers To Say Slavery Was Good For Slaves

Ron DeSantis has set for new educational standards to teach middle schooler students that “slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit,”

This is just another effort in the Florida Governor’s push to de-emphasize racism in his state’s public school curriculum. These updates to the African American history curriculum were required by the recent “Stop Wrongs To Our Kids and Employees Act,” or “Stop WOKE Act.” Further, in January, DeSantis blocked a new AP course on African American studies stating it violates state law and was historically inaccurate.

Florida teachers will now be required to teach students that at slavery benefited African Americans who “gained skills” that “eventually parlayed … into doing other things in life”. Civil rights leaders and scholars argue it minimizes slavery’s cruelty and misrepresents centuries of U.S. reality. The Florida Education Association, the 150,000 strong teachers’ union, called the new standards “a disservice to Florida’s students” and “a big step backward”. And even VP Kamala Harris weighed in, calling it an attempt “to replace history with lies” and stating what should be obvious “there were no redeeming qualities of slavery."
