as posted by the channelLahaina, an area that was once the capital of the Hawaiian kingdom, is burnt to the ground this week with hundreds dead and over a thousand still unaccounted for.
This is after only a third of the area has been scoured. The fire most likely started after a power line fell to the ground as high winds hit the island. The local utility has faced criticism for not shutting off power during these windstorms, which create the perfect environment for wildfires.
These strong winds and unreliable infrastructure systems while paired with invasive highly flammable plants most likely contributed to the size and scope of the fire only worsened by the drought that the island has suffered in recent years.
More than 2,700 structures have been destroyed in what is now the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century. Many residents say they received little to no warning before the fire engulfed their homes and now a week after the fires started, some are still struggling to receive power, cell phone service, and assistance.
