After making an effort to not cross the picket line in May after being asked MTV Movie & TV Awards, Drew Barrymore has now reversed course and revoked her solidarity with those striking for better working conditions.
This week it was announced that the talk show would be returning to air without written material that is “covered by the WGA strike.” Essentially, this means that the highly produced show will no longer be being produced by the writers who worked on it. On Monday as they began filming and picketers began, Drew took to Instagram to justify her decision.
“Our show was built for sensitive times and has only functioned through what the real world is going through in real time,” she said. “I want to be there to provide what writers do so well, which is a way to bring us together or help us make sense of the human experience. I hope for a resolve for everyone as soon as possible.” Despite claiming that her show is somehow not going against union rules, the Writers Guild of America clarified that the show was covered by its union and that “any writing on ‘The Drew Barrymore Show’ is in violation of WGA strike rules.”
Meanwhile, late night shows, which are also extremely effected by the strike, remain off the air. Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers and John Oliver are donating proceeds of their podcast, called “Strike Force Five” to support for their shows’ staffs.
