as posted by the channelOn Saturday morning 100 Hamas gunmen broke through the barrier fence that separates Gaza from Israel and attacked civilians and military personnel in 5 location. One especially viral moment from the attack came as fighters overtook a music festival in the Nir Oz kibbutz in the Negev desert.
War in Gaza is not new, but mass Israeli casualties and the kind of assault we saw over the weekend hasn't happened since the second intifada in 2000-2005 which still didn’t reach these numbers.
Currently over 100 people are being held hostage. Hamas has now threatened to kill one captive every time Israel’s military bombs civilian targets in Gaza without warning. Yet an Israeli official says “there is no negotiation” for the release of hostages, responding to an earlier claim by a Hamas source that Israel had been in touch with Qatar as a mediator. Qatar has held urgent calls to try to negotiate freedom for Israeli women and children seized by the militant group and in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, also especially women and children, to be freed.
Though many responded to this disaster by affirming their support of Israel, it is clear that at the same time Israel is not proceeding with caution to save the lives of the hostages. Could this could be a wake up call at all to Israeli society that the occupation is untenable?
