The little boy, Wadea Al-Fayoume, was killed by his 71-year-old landlord in Illinois. The landlord had been consuming right-wing media such as conservative talk radio and was "heavily interested" in the conflict in Israel.
His wife described him getting increasingly paranoid, saying that he had withdrawn $1,000 from a bank “in case the U.S. grid went down,” and was anxious he would be attacked by Arab people. He channelled that Islamophobia into a heinous attack on his tenants, and now he has been charged with first-degree murder and two hate crimes.
This man stabbed a little boy 26 TIMES. The boy’s mother is in serious condition. “This despicable hate crime is a shameful reminder of the destructive role Islamophobia plays in our society,” said Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson.
Unfortunately, this is just a warning sign of what’s to come with increasing rhetoric that dehumanizes Palestinians.
