What will happen to the Palestinians forced to leave Gaza? At least 1.7 million Palestinians have been displaced since the bombing of Gaza began. It’s becoming clear that Israel will not rest until Palesitnians are pushed out of the area altogether, as they have bombed even the places that they told Gazans to flee.
The UN agency for Palestine refugees says that over 800,000 internally displaced people are taking refuge in their shelters across the Gaza Strip. But even there they are not safe. In one day two U.N. schools sheltering displaced families were bombed causing "many deaths," including children.
Now, neighboring countries like Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon are feeling the pressure as Palestinians are forced out of their country. For the most part, Egypt and Jordan both hold the line that they will not accept Palestinian refugees. Jordan’s Abdullah II echoed the message saying “No refugees in Jordan, no refugees in Egypt.”
These countries’ unwillingness to take in those is not simply because they don’t have the facilities or humanitarian muscle to do so, it’s also because they have already taken in millions of Palestinians over the last 75 years. We spoke with Trita Parsi, executive vice president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, about how the international community will respond to the growing crisis.
