Is our sweatpants-wearing Pennsylvanian progressive betraying the movement?
John Fetterman still believes in many left-wing goals: a $15 minimum wage, universal health care, legalizing marijuana and abolishing the Senate filibuster. But he has decided to approach one major issue the same way as any Republican: supporting Israel’s war on the people of Gaza. And for a guy who believes in getting money out of politics, he’s actually received hundreds of thousands of dollars from pro-Israel groups like J-Street.
When the Pennsylvanian senator ran for lieutenant governor, Bernie Sanders called him a “outstanding progressive” in his endorsement. Now, Fetterman is outwardly critizing the left on issues like Palestine and immigration and has come out and said the label of “progressive” does not fit him anymore.
The Senator has plastered Israeli hostage missing posters around his office after the Oct. 7 Hamas attack, been extremely vocal on X, and now says both the left and right “want him dead.” While some progressives feel betrayed or duped, Fetterman’s chief of staff holds that “he spent the entire campaign telling people he wasn’t a down-the-line lefty.”
