When the USPS union announced they opposed Israeli genocide back in October they were largely alone.
American Postal Workers Union (APWU) President Mark Dimondstein, who represents 200,000 post office workers and delivery people across the country, called for an immediate ceasefire in an AFL-CIO meeting over two months ago.
Now however, many unions have joined the fight. In December, 1199SEIU, the nation’s largest healthcare union, called for a ceasefire now, as did United Electrical and Radio Machine (UE) workers. Teachers unions such as the Chicago Teachers Union have done the same. The UAW is the largest union to have called for a ceasefire, representing 400,000 workers and more than 580,000 retirees.
“I am proud that the UAW International Union is calling for a ceasefire in Israel and Palestine,” tweeted UAW president Shawn Fain on Dec 1. “From opposing fascism in WWII to mobilizing against apartheid South Africa and the CONTRA war, the UAW has consistently stood for justice across the globe.”
