What do the Houthis actually want?
You wouldn’t know the answer from any mainstream media coverage but the Houthis are a rebel group that controls territory in Yemen that’s been in a war against the Saudi-backed Yemeni government for almost a decade. AND they want an end to Israel’s assault on Gaza and are doing nearly everything in their power to accomplish that mission.
The Houthis entered or reentered the zeitgeist when they began attacking international cargo ships in the Red Sea and disrupting global commerce. At least 16 ships have been struck, disrupting some $200 billion in trade.
The US has retaliated by air striking parts of Yemen, not just to defend global capitalism but also defend Israel specifically. Biden was asked recently if he believed the attacks on the Houthis were working, to which he responded “No.” He was asked further if the attacks would continue, to which he responded “Yes.” There is a growing bipartisan effort to call into question Biden’s unilateral strikes on Yemen, as they were not approved by Congress.
This would not be the first time the US meddled, displaced, and killed people in Yemen under the guise of fighting global terror. There has been a Saudi-backed effort to get rid of the Houthi rebels, which is supported by the United States. Though their campaign has been mostly ineffective, it has resulted in starvation and displacement in the Middle East’s poorest country. Neat!
