Has the AI bubble finally popped?

We spoke with Paris Marx of the Tech Won’t Save Us about the use, misuse, realities of artificial intelligence. While AI can seem like magic, it not only brings up issues of copyright and plagiarism but may be more dangerous than we realize.

Training AI models require significant computational power; according to OpenAI researchers, since 2012, the amount of computing power required has doubled every 3.4 months. Large-scale data centers, which support AI operations, also consume substantial amounts of electricity. This can contribute to increased carbon emissions, by 2040, it is expected that the emissions from the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry as a whole will reach 14% of the global emissions.

AI also surprisingly uses a lot of water, ChatGPT 'drinks' the equivalent of a 500ml bottle of water for a simple conversation. Which may not seem like a ton but in 2021 Google’s data centers alone used over 12 billion liters of freshwater for on-site cooling.

Additionally, the rapid pace of technological advancements in AI can lead to the quick obsolescence of hardware and devices known as e-waste. BBy 2050, the World Economic Forum (WEF) projects that the total amount of e-waste generated will have surpassed 120 million metric tonnes.
