“The Squad” is a term that gets thrown around all the time, but what does it actually mean to be part of it? Are there weekly meetings, a book club, or any kind of caucus mechanism to this amorphous group of lawmakers? According to Rep. Ilhan Omar, courtesy of guest Ryan Grim’s reporting, “there’s no such thing as the squad.” Unfortunately for Grim, that just so happens to be the topic of his latest book, The Squad, on sale now.
In 2019, the staff of the congressional representative who were unambiguous members of “the Squad” would work together, or at least throw ideas around on different policy proposals or potential moves to make. This lasted roughly a year until this low level of coordination fell victim to staff turnover (some on better terms than others) and growing rifts between the groups’ members.
Unfortunately for folks who are interested in social democratic policies like Medicare for All, or any permanent reimposition of a safety net, the Squad is largely a shorthand in the media these days for Democrats to the left of Joe Biden. During the fight over the passage of Build Back Better, we got a taste of the power they might have if they stuck together. In the end they were defeated when Democrats got Republicans to support the bill in their stead, but still “the Squad” was able to extract some concessions throughout the process by voting together.
