Where are you getting your news on Gaza? Your answer might mean you believe wildly different facts about the region and the violence there. Never has there been a greater divide between mainstream news coverage and social media news coverage than the one we’re seeing now in covering the story of the war on Gaza. As The Intercept documents, mainstream news outlets skew heavily pro-Israel, downplaying the death of Palestinians while overinflating the attacks of October 7th.
Nowhere has that been more evident than the paper of record, the New York Times. Thanks to The Intercept’s reporting, we now know that the reporting the Times conducted detailing Hamas’ sexual violence against Israelis was shoddy at best and deliberating misleading at worst. Rape was not systemic, as the article claims, and multiple witnesses relied upon by the Times changed their accounts of what they saw. Added to that, the Times’ reporter Anat Schwartz has been liking tweets over the months that relish in the brutality of the IDF. This is an impartial reporter?
In reality, it seems that Times decided that ‘mass rape’ was going to be a story they would cover, and they then found the so-called journalists to report on the pre-arranged narrative. The evidence they cited was scant, largely based on sourcing within the Israeli military, and has completely fallen apart after closer examination.
From downplaying genocide to outright lies, corporate media has not been honest actors in this conflict.
