Trumpism might feel very American, but there are others across the globe going by the same playbook. In India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the head of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a political party centered around Hindu nationalism. That nationalism has meant open discrimination against religious minorities like Muslims and Sikhs in India. Prior to his Prime Ministership, Modi had ruled as Chief Minister of Gujarat, and under his leadership he oversaw (or maybe encouraged) the Gujarat riots, where violence from Hindu Nationalists was responsible for upwards of 2,000 mainly Muslim deaths in the province. As a result, the U.S. State Department barred him from entering the United States due to his extreme anti-Muslim views and actions. A few years later he was elected Prime Minister, and is now the longest serving PM in India’s history.
Modi’s impact on the diaspora Indian population, in our case in the United States, is profound. Non-Hindu Indians are incredibly skeptical of the BJP, while other Hindus might see him through a nationalist lens that’s removed from the anti-minority ideas Modi is guided by. Sikhs in the United States and Canada have even been subject to assassination attempts, likely carried out directly by, or inspired by, the BJP itself.
