You wouldn’t know it from Republican talking points but Biden is actually making life harder for asylum seekers. He’s not ‘providing them with a ballot and cold hard cash’ when they enter the country, but a cold detention bed and an asylum rejection. While even Democrats flail about Biden’s failing border and the so-called ‘border crisis,’ the truth is that border cruelty has only increased under Biden.
Title 42, also known as the ‘remain in Mexico’ policy, was just one of Trump’s border policies that Biden vowed to end, alongside stopping family separation and reforming the asylum system. For more than a year, Biden kept Trump’s Title 42 in place which allowed border agents to expel migrants ‘because of Covid’ without hearing asylum claims. And when Biden finally did do away with Title 42, it was replaced with arguably an even tougher policy.
Biden has barred migrants from asylum if they don’t request refugee status before entering the U.S. Therefore, in order to avoid immediate deportation and detention, migrants trying to enter the U.S. would have to use the government's glitchy and biometric-collecting CBPOne app.
Rather than address the root causes of migration– war, climate change, failed foreign policy– these deterrent efforts by the Biden administration echo Vice President Kamala’s chilling words to Latin American migrants: “do not come”.
