Lately it seems like AI is being touted as the solution to any problem in the world, from identifying Covid from just a cough or writing your essay for you. But how much should people really be hyping up this technology that steals our data, uses massive amounts of fresh water, and might be taking our jobs?
If you’ve ever uploaded anything to social media platforms, contributed to open source code, or posted pictures online, you’ve done work for tech companies because generative AI systems are using your data to learn about the world.
AI companies have already been taken to court over data theft. “Despite established protocols for the purchase and use of personal information, Defendants took a different approach: theft,” the lawyers wrote in a lawsuit filed in California against ChatGPT. The data accessed included “private information and private conversations, medical data, information about children…without notice to the owners or users of such data, much less with anyone's permission.”
This lack of privacy and autonomy of the internet is just one repercussion of the proliferation of AI and profit-driven internet—but who cares if we are able to use AI to improve the taste of beer right?
