As the Tech Oversight Project points out, US-based companies like Meta, Amazon, and Google have also pushed “harmful content with predatory algorithms, aided U.S. adversaries and worked against U.S. national interests at home and abroad, and failed to protect users’ personal data.” TikTok is not an outlier.
Banning or pseudo-banning the app in the U.S. does not actually get at the cause of the harm that many tech companies cause. Furthermore, selling TikTok to a U.S.-based billionaire certainly won’t solve any broader privacy and data problems. We spoke with tech journalist Jacob Silverman, author of “Easy Money: Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism, and the Golden Age of Fraud”, and is working on a new book about the right-wing lurch of Silicon Valley and Big Tech.

US-based billionaire Jeffery Yass has a personal share in ByteDance of 7%, worth roughly $21 billion. Is rumored Trump may even tap Yass as his Treasury Secretary.
