9:17Now PlayingWhile students on Columbia’s campus encampment were arrested en masse, President Minouche Shafik took the stand for a congressional hearing about anti-Semitism.
Hearings on college campus anti-antisemitism successfully took down two university presidents at both Harvard and UPenn. Shafik, who is the first female president of Columbia University, appointed just last year had a lot on the line -- would she take the bait from Elise Stefanik just like President Gay and President Magill before her? Sort of.
In the hearing, GOP representatives falsely portrayed Palestinian resistance on campus, like distributing pamphlets that read “from the river to the sea” slogan as anti-Semitic, or even genocidal. The accusations have only increased as campus protests have sprung up around the country.
Shafik and Columbia’s board of trustees said it is “difficult and heartbreaking” to hear members of the university community feel unsafe, members of the community were being surveilled and harassed by the New York police department. But then she also buckled under a gotcha line of questioning from Rep. McClain about “intifada” being antisemitic as well as a bizarre question from another representative about Palestine protests leading to the university being “cursed by god.” Excuse us?
