Celebrating Passover As An Anti-Zionist Jew

“Too many of our people are worshipping a false idol once again. They are enraptured by it. Drunk on it. Profaned by it. That false idol is called Zionism.”

Those were the words of author Naomi Klein at a “Seder in the Streets”, where American Jews celebrated Passover by standing against genocide and occupation and were subsequently arrested by the NYPD.

This is the first Passover since Israel’s onslaught of Gaza. And it’s hitting Jews who do not agree with Netanyahu’s plans hardest. Comedian and labor organizer Nato Green explains how the holiday that has everything to do with seeking justice, feeding the hungry, and ending enslavement, is hitting different during a genocide.

Passover is a week-long Jewish holiday celebrating the end of slavery for the Israelites, the leadership of Moses and their liberation from the Pharoah as was written in the Torah or Old Testament. At Passover dinner, various foods and drinks symbolize the suffering that the Jewish people endured and recounts the story of their freedom. But it’s hard not to go through the tradition and not be reminded of the death and destruction in Gaza currently being done in the name of Jews. And the reality is, so many American Jews are calling for an immediate ceasefire and an end to the occupation.
