Trump has been trying to get out of his 91 criminal charges by resting on the concept of president immunity: the legal protection granted to the president from being personally sued or prosecuted for actions taken in their official capacity while in office. Apparently this is based on the principle that they need the freedom to make difficult decisions without the constant threat of personal legal liability. Which makes sense if you presume all presidents past, present and future to be perfect, good, moral and acting on behalf of the American people at all times. LOL.
Trump is proof that in fact presidents are petty and do things like pressuring an ally to dig up dirt on their opponent (Ukraine on Biden), or simply steal classified documents and keep them in their private residence. And after Trump was indicted for the Jan 6 attack on the Capitol, he asked a federal judge to throw out the charges, saying that he could not be held criminally liable for his official acts even after leaving office precisely because of “presidential immunity”. Silly right?
Nope. The case is now being examined by the highest court and of course the judges appointed by Trump were sympathetic to his argument. It's nearly certain that Trump’s buddies on the bench will affirm President Donald Trump’s claim that presidents (meaning him) have absolute immunity from criminal charges based on their official acts as president. But regardless of exactly how SCOTUS rules, Trump has the power of time on his hands, as he can use this ruling to delay his other trials until after the election. And he and his friends in high places will try and do just that.
