Federal documents obtained by the Associated Press show that pregnant people were turned away from emergency rooms en masse in 2022 after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Since that time the Biden Administration has been investigating this practice and trying to take hospitals to task.
Because despite a federal law that requires emergency rooms to treat people in active labor, hospitals are ignoring the provision and putting women in horrific situations like miscarrying in the lobby of the ER instead of inside a room. In April, The Supreme Court also heard arguments that would weaken the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act and the protections it provides.
The investigation also found that in North Carolina, after a woman was turned away from a hospital for an ultrasound, she gave birth in a car and the baby later died. Clearly these efforts to outlaw abortion and protect life are doing anything but, and putting women and childrens’ lives in danger.
