This month, Governor Ron DeSantis created a first of its kind ban on cultivated or lab-grown meat in the state of Florida. Lab-grown meat, an alternative protein made from animal cells, was only cleared for consumption in the US in 2022. But apparently right-wing politicians have beef with the product.
As climate change experts zero in on beef production as a major contributor to methane emissions, the reality is many people aren’t willing to give up meat from their diet entirely. Thus, making meat in the lab reduces the land, water, and crops, not to mention the cruelty to livestock, required for meat production.
The Florida governor claims that the "global elite's plan to force the world to eat meat grown in a petri dish or bugs." What? Though DeSantis and GOP leaders in Alabama, Arizona and Tennessee may be painting the move as defiant against a global conspiracy, in reality, their pockets are just lined by the cattle lobby.
