10:03Now PlayingKentucky’s crazy “Safer Kentucky Act” decriminalizes deadly force against homeless people.
The bill which goes into effect in July, allows private property owners to shoot first and questions later if they believe that a trespasser or homeless person is going to commit a felony or is attempting to “deposses” them.
The set of tough on crime laws also criminalizes being homeless by calling sleeping outside in public or on private property “unlawful camping,” punishable by an initial fine of $250 with further infractions resulting in a class B misdemeanor, which could mean up to 90 days in jail.
The bill 78-page-long also reinstates the three-strike law, meaning people convicted of three so-called violent crimes could face prison for life. So so-called “violent” crimes now also include offenses like burglary or car-jacking. Research from the Kentucky Center for Economic Policy found that HB 5 would cost the state more than $1 billion over a decade.
