When the president publicly declared a ceasefire proposal, which calls for an initial six-week ceasefire, release of hostages, and an Israeli retreat from Gaza, Netanyahu was likely caught by surprise. Despite the deal coming from Israel itself, Netanyahu is now backing away from it. The prime minister is under threat from right wingers in his coaltiion government who are threatening to topple his leadership should he press forward. Plus, Netanyahu has nothing politically to gain and everything to lose from ending the war, as he most certainly will be ousted no matter what.
Biden knows it too. This week when TIME magazine asked the President whether he believed Netanyahu was “prolonging the war for his own political self-preservation,” he responded that “there is every reason for people to draw that conclusion.” However, in a later interview on Tuesday when asked whether Netanyahu was “playing politics with the war”, Biden said: “I don’t think so. He’s trying to work out a serious problem he has.”
It seems like Biden can’t decide what side he’s on when it comes to Israel’s genocide. But he’ll soon have to figure it out as Bibi visits the US and speaks to Congress later this month. Meanwhile, the death toll in Rafah only grows…
