Donald Trump is making campaign promises left and right with no expectation that he’ll keep them.
Last week, Trump promised to make in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment free for all at a campaign stop in Michigan if he is elected in November. “ We want more babies, to put it very nicely,” Trump said. Separately, Trump said that under his administration the government would pay for any American who wants it to get IVF, or that they would mandate insurance companies cover it. These explanations lasted about 10 minutes until they were walked back by the campaign, and meanwhile congressional Republicans are voting against any support or protections for IVF.
But that’s not all, he also went so far as to critique a six-week abortion ban in Florida. “I think six weeks is too short,” Trump said Thursday. “There has to be more time and so I want more weeks. I am going to be voting that there will be more than six weeks.” As a voter in Florida, Trump has the ability to cast his vote on a Florida ballot measure, initially keeping it up in the air about whether he would vote to protect the right to abortion even if the fetus is viable.
