All three refused to endorse a candidate for president for November. But that doesn’t mean they are sitting out their election cycle. Of all of them, pop star Chappell Roan perhaps earned the most ire from Democrats who tried to slam her for both-sides-ing it, even going so far as to say that she is essentially endorsing Donald Trump. It should be obvious that Roan, who regularly speaks out about trans rights, drag queens, and for Palestinians was not implying that people should vote for Trump on election day.
The Uncommitted Movement, who formed against Joe Biden as the presidential nominee also made a non-endorsement and similarly were chastised for somehow pushing voters toward Trump or to sit out the election. However, their statement clearly urged “Uncommitted voters to register anti-Trump votes and vote up and down the ballot.”
Meanwhile, the million-member International Brotherhood of Teamsters will also sit this one out for the first time since 1996, citing division amongst their membership. After Sean O’Brien’s RNC speech, perhaps it should be no surprise that the union is taking a different approach. Yet Teamsters locals across the country, including in swing states like Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, are choosing to independently endorse Harris anyway.
