as posted by the channelIt seems as though Louisiana Senator John Kennedy didn’t get the memo. In a congressional hearing about hate crimes, you aren’t supposed to actually be committing hate crimes on the stand.
Last week, executive director of the Arab American Institute, Maya Berry, was at the receiving end of some very heinous Islamophobic vitriol from the senator while she testified. At the same time, a racist cartoon of Representative Rashida Tlaib was published in the Nation Review. Even in the halls of Congress, Islamophobia is a serious issue that seems to only be getting worse.
On the Hill, Berry was asked several times by Senator Kennedy if she supported Hamas.
Berry responded with a surprising answer. “Senator, oddly enough, I'm going to say thank you for that question, because it demonstrates the purpose of our hearing today in a very effective way… Hamas is a foreign terrorist organization that I do not support, but you asking the executive director of the Arab American Institute that question very much puts the focus on the issue of hate in our country.”
And with her masterful response, Berry led a masterclass in owning racists which earned her applause. Members of Congress weren’t silent about the cartoon depiction of Tlaib either, with Jewish politicians penning a letter condemning the hate. “At a time of rising violence against Arab, Muslim, and Jewish communities alike, we must stand together in solidarity against ethnic scapegoating and hateful provocations, which are often the prelude to actual racial violence and attack.”
