Meteorologists are crying at how severe this storm is, how quickly it developed in the abnormally warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico from a category 1 to a category 5 hurricane. Now millions are struggling to evacuate, but flights are cost prohibitive, hotels are booked up, highways are clogged and gas is in short supply. It's truly apocalyptic. If only we took climate change seriously, how could it be different?
Well, Ron DeSantis should be answering this question directly. His administration not only deleted any mentions of climate change from its state laws, but it also rejected hundreds of millions of dollars from the federal government to retrofit homes to be less energy consuming and therefore lowering emissions. Meanwhile he's a standard drill baby drill Republican who's obsessed with oil and gas extraction, when oil and gas extraction are quite literally leading to the destruction of his state.
Who among us doesn't imagine that in 20 years DeSantis will be living on a pristine ranch in Utah, far from a state that is increasingly at risk from climate chaos.
