In a recent campaign appearance, Trump visited a Bronx barbershop to talk economics. While there, he mused about totally removing the federal income tax, and baselessly claimed that those revenues could be made up for by tariffs. His evidence for this? America in the 1890s.
As with any Trump claim, the idea that the federal government was funded through tariffs over 100 years ago is based on lies. Back in the day, over half of federal revenue actually came from a federal tax on alcohol, with tariffs making up a smaller percentage. Trump’s ridiculous 100, 200, or even 1000% tariffs would not put money in people’s pockets, nor would the ridiculous proposal of eliminating the federal income tax.
Matter of fact, because of tariffs in the 1890s the U.S. was plunged into a deep recession. Some folks think that taxes are keeping them poor, but in reality it’s an unfair tax structure which allows for billionaire tax EVASION, the likes of which Trump participates in, that's keeping us down.
